Aircraft electronics technicians take care of the electronics in airplanes and helicopters. Among other things, they install electrical and electronic assemblies. Aircraft electronics technicians work through detailed checklists so that no device or screw is overlooked.
In contrast to some assumptions, even the employment opportunities for aircraft electronics technicians are very diverse. You not only work for airlines but also various aerospace technology companies. The Bundeswehr and repair and maintenance workshops at airports are also possible employers. Places of use are workshops and maintenance halls, workshops, aircraft cabins, and aircraft decks.
Avionics technician responsibilities and requirements
The path to becoming an aircraft electronics technician leads through appropriate industry training. This is officially recognized and regulated by the training ordinance. It usually lasts three and a half years and takes place in the dual learning system. Training locations are the vocational school and the training company. Specific school education is not required by law. In practice, however, companies are increasingly employing applicants with a secondary school leaving certificate. Good grades in mathematics, computer science, and physics increase the chances of getting a training position.
The training prepares prospective aircraft electronics technicians both theoretically and practically for their future profession. Among other things, they get to know work processes on aircraft, electrical, electronic, and digital circuits, mechanical components and devices, electrical power supply, and components and subsystems of avionics. You will learn how drive systems are inspected, how aircraft-specific drives and their controls are maintained, and how aircraft and flight monitoring systems are tested. Also, they deal with the procurement of materials and relevant safety regulations. They learn to read technical drawings and to document their work correctly.
If you want to work successfully as an aircraft electronics technician, you need personal and social skills. Every applicant should have a technical understanding, an interest in aerospace technology, and manual skills. Also, there is a sense of responsibility and a careful way of working. These properties are necessary for every activity – regardless of whether you are installing new devices or maintaining existing components. Even a petite mistake can have disastrous consequences. Dexterity and good hand-eye coordination help when installing the tiniest details or when performing soldering work. Caution is also essential. After all, aircraft experts work on components and cables that are live. Most employers also require teamwork, commitment skills. Language skills are also essential for communication purposes. Shift work and work on public holidays and weekends are also part of many employers’ position.
