Job Description: what exactly does a bartender do?
Bartenders mix alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails and drinks in bars and nightspots, which they serve to their guests. They know the standard recipes and taste properties of well-known mixed drinks or create new mixes. You work in a team with colleagues and – depending on the type and size of the business – with other specialists in the hospitality industry.
In addition to mixed drinks, they also give other drinks, such as wine, punch bowls, or hot drinks, and collect the bill. They often also serve small snacks. Bartenders are responsible for cleaning the glasses and the cleanliness on and behind the counter and setting up the bar. They ensure that all ingredients and materials are available for the preparation and serving of beverages. They also do administrative tasks. For example, bartenders take care of billing and inventory, the beverage warehouse, or compliance with hygiene regulations.
For bartenders, it is essential that they enjoy dealing with people and communicating. Often there is high time pressure (especially in seasonal businesses in the tourism industry), but they still serve their guests in a friendly and attentive manner and maintain an overview. They often work night shifts and on weekends and public holidays.
