How to write a creative resume: tips for applying

A creative resume (CV) is particularly useful for artistic jobs or those that are located in rather young companies. It is worthwhile for applicants to deal with the topic. Because studies show that HR managers usually only need a few seconds to decide on the further application of the candidate.

Creative CV: Classic structure

Applicants shouldn’t overdo it with their creative resume either. Because although, for example, the graphic elements and perhaps also the formatting can be creative, this does not apply to the complete resume. Most HR managers prefer a classic arrangement, especially about their professional positions. The reason: With this arrangement, they know what to look for and wherein the CV – and that saves them time, which is usually scarce. A clear advantage for the applicant. The rule of thumb is therefore that applicants who want to submit a creative resume should also use the classic structure as a guide. As a rule, the so-called American CV is used for this. This means that the information about the applicant is at the top of the document.

The professional stages in the creative resume

Then it goes to the previous professional activities of the applicant. Here the so-called reverse chronological listing is recommended. That makes sense because the HR manager wants to know as quickly as possible which position the applicant is currently holding. This is the only way he can judge whether he has the necessary qualifications and skills for the advertised job. In addition to the current company and the specific title of the position, applicants can add a brief description of the activities. Especially with creative resume, things can be a little more innovative here. As long as it is clear to the HR manager what their daily work consists of, applicants can let their creativity run free at this point. The previous positions follow the current position in reverse order. They should not be too detailed, because even with a creative resume, it should not be longer than two A4 pages.

Further formalities in the CV

Even if applicants do not have to adhere to the conventions quite as closely with a creative resume, it should still meet the formal requirements. This means that the following information should also be included:

  • School education with the highest educational qualification
  • Education
  • Advanced training
  • Special skills and knowledge: You should only list these if they are specifically related to the job you are applying for

With all information, always remember that it must add value. It must be immediately clear to the recruiter what advantage he would have if he were to hire you. The selection of the things that you mention on the resume should always be made with this in mind.

Creative CV: The Differences

In terms of design, a creative resume gives you more freedom. For example, if you are applying as a graphic designer, this should be made clear in your resume. This can then contain more colorful elements and special graphics. You may want to completely replace the headings with graphics that you created yourself – this format allows it. Even application photos do not necessarily have to correspond to the classic norm for a creative CV. If you have an original idea, give this one a try. Basically: Everything that draws the attention of the recruiter to your application in a positive way is welcome. Especially in creative industries, your resume can be seen as the first work sample. It is therefore worthwhile to proceed with particular care. This increases the chances that an interview invitation will work.
