Job description: what does a fitness manager do?
Sports and fitness managers take care of administrative and organizational tasks in sports companies and create concepts for sports offers. In addition, they offer customers of sports facilities, fitness studios, wellness centers, or leisure facilities all-around sporting care. They provide information and tips on fitness exercises, safety precautions, recovery phases, and a healthy diet.
Sports and fitness manager is a very varied profession with a wide range of activities. They advise customers about membership options, prices, service offers, and training plans in a fitness studio. In addition, they constantly come up with new offers to win customers. You are looking for advertising partners and possible collaborations with sports shops and major employers in the city. You invite new customers or interested parties to a first trial course. They guide them through the gym and explain all of its facilities. In addition, sports and fitness salespeople create individual training plans, conclude customer contracts and take on commercial tasks away from the sports facilities. You take care of incoming invoices, cash reports, and various invoices. You contribute to the annual financial statements and the inventory. They also maintain the fitness studio’s website and ensure effective social media marketing. Now and then, they also organize sporting events. You organize the premises and plan the deployment of staff. Or they organize major events such as marathons. You develop a unique concept and ensure that it is implemented and that it runs smoothly.
Sports and fitness salespeople have many job opportunities. They work in sports and fitness studios, sports associations and clubs, and operators of sports facilities. They also find employment in wellness and health centers, with sports organizers, and in sports schools. Their places of work are also very different. From time to time, they work in the office, warehouse, or various salesrooms. More often, however, they are directly active in fitness rooms, gymnasiums, and sports halls, on sports fields, or in wellness zones.
Sports and fitness manager responsibilities and requirements
The companies themselves select the participants according to their criteria. A particular school leaving certificate is not required by law. However, most sports and fitness salespeople have a middle school education. Excellent grades in sports are also important, as is an interest in commercial tasks.
The dual training ideally prepares prospective sports and fitness managers for their future tasks. At the vocational school, they acquire technical basics. In the training company, they train their practical skills. They learn to create sporting services, develop advertising concepts and organize sporting and non-sporting events. You will deal with the procurement of benefits in kind, the development of marketing strategies, the performance of personnel management tasks, and customer support. You will also learn how business processes are controlled success-oriented, and investment decisions are prepared. They practice using relevant computer programs and mature into experts in sports medicine topics. But the trainers also convey legal principles, hygiene regulations, and environmental protection.
In addition to professional qualifications, sports and fitness salespeople need some talents and social skills. It would help if you had athletic skills and organizational talent, communication skills, an interest in business administration, and pedagogical skills for advising customers. Manual skills and body control are necessary for working on the fitness equipment—commercial thinking, a sense of responsibility, diligence, and negotiating skills for the tasks in the office. Negotiations with suppliers and customers also require assertiveness and persuasiveness. In addition, there is a willingness to contact as well as customer and service orientation. These characteristics are necessary to be able to advise customers successfully and to respond to their wishes. Many employers also require flexibility and commitment. Sports and fitness managers often work when other people have free time. This is not uncommon on weekends and in the early evening hours.
